Butterfly Garden at Westbourne Park Community Centre

Late last week, a Butterfly Garden was installed in the Westbourne Park Community Centre carpark entrance.

The students in J2 were lucky enough to be able to take part in the planting process. Before the gardening started, we were informed of the different needs of a Butterfly Attracting Garden and made sure that the correct plant species were chosen. Both host plants for caterpillars and nectar plants for butterflies make up the beautiful selection of nature in this area. Being installed at a later date will be a bird bath for water, stepping stones and a boundary to protect the garden.

We extend many thanks to Rebecca Neumann for her wonderful involvement and organisation in the gardening process and parent volunteer, Denise, for helping the students with the planting. We would also like to thank The Dowd family who kindly prepared the area for the gardening to happen!

Carolyn Powers visits Westbourne Park

The classes of M4 and M7 have been learning about the different levels of government in Australia.

On Wednesday, 15th September, the State Member of Parliament for the seat of Elder, Carolyn Power, came to Westbourne Primary School to educate the classes of M4 and M7 on the importance of parliament and how it functions.

Carolyn Powers came in to teach us about parliament, we learnt that parliament is a very complicated thing, and that we can make a difference by doing one small thing to impact in what we are trying to do. Carolyn Powers started parliament in 2018, she is in the liberal party and she takes care of Westbourne park, Clarence park etc. She is a very good role model for us students and most of us year 5’s at the end of the presentations wanted to make a change and join parliament when we are older. Sienna

In HASS recently we have been learning about how parliament functions in Australia on Wednesday we had a visit from Ms Powers member for Elder. Some of the things that I most enjoyed about Ms Powers visit were when we formed two parties and had a mock debate over, we should have Wednesdays of school the answer from the do classes was a definite Yes! Later some questions were asked about parliament from some students, some interesting questions were. “Why is there a blood line in the house of Assembly but not the Legislative council?” and other similar questions. I think our class had a lot of fun as I certainly did. Xavier

Buzz off Fruit Fly!

This week M9 was lucky enough to have the Minister for Education, Hon. John Gardner and the Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development, Hon. David Basham visit our classroom to launch a Fruit Fly resource.

“Buzz off Fruit Fly” explores the impact of fruit fly in your own home garden and offers practical tips such as how to identify fruit flies and the importance of putting fruit in green bins rather than composting. M9 were very excited to be involved in the resource launch and would love for everyone to keep an eye out for the book and the bins!
