The Creation of the Mural
During Week 2, Aboriginal Artist, Scott Rathman, came to WPPS to host a workshop with a selected group of 30 students. He worked with them through the idea of iconography, and how prevalent this is in Aboriginal art. Every student was asked to identify how they felt connected to our school, and they then designed an icon to represent this connection. From the wonderful designs created by our students, Scott was then able to create the beautiful mural that you can now see on the shed in Yard B. Below is the explanation of his design and its representation:
“The mural represents how friendship, with both staff and students, gives the children of WPPS a sense of belonging within our Westbourne Park community. In the middle of the artwork is a gathering place with children sitting together. In the centre of this is a student designed symbol that represents friendship, and how it creates a sense of being listened to and heard at school. The two additional symbols represent that friendships nurture us as we grow, and that our friendships help us to find our own voice. This has been linked with Aboriginal peoples connection to Country, and shows them coming together to create an overall sense of belonging.”
Well done to all students involved in the design process! Thank you very much to the Fundraising Committee who were able to raise the funds for this wonderful piece of art.

Performing Arts
Wakakirri has started wonderfully, and the 90+ kids that have signed on are already well on their way to telling a great story. This year the theme is ‘monkey’, and we are retelling Jumanji. We have a host of different animals, characters and some very clued-in backstage crew. Wakakirri will be presented in week 2 or term 3.
Festival of Music choir has begun and our 25 choristers have 13 new songs to learn, including 6 commissioned songs by the South Australian composer Glyn Lehmann. On Tuesday we had a special visit from Cathy in Festival head office, and 40 students from McLaren Vale Primary School. We had a sing through the repertoire, and our kids did an amazing job. The Festival of Music performance will be in week 8 or 9 of term 3.
Junior choir has also started well, with many year 1-4 students rehearsing on Wednesdays at lunchtime and learning our first set of songs. Sisi ni moja, Rockstar and some Disney.
