M9 & M10 Excursion – Migration Museum and Ayers House

On Thursday of Week 4, M9 & M10 went on an excursion to the Migration Museum and Ayers House as part of our history learning. We chose these places because we have been learning about what life was like over a century ago or in the ‘olden days’ and comparing ‘now and then’, and both of these places gave us wonderful opportunities to see and learn about things from these times.

“At Ayers House we went exploring. There was a lot of chandeliers. There was one or two for every room and there was a really soft couch. There was an ice chest in the kitchen instead of a fridge.” Louis M9

“I liked that when we went to the museum, we got to see where the naughty girls and boys and the girls’ jail and I liked that at Ayers House we did so many things! We made peg dolls and I liked how we used the peg as the body” Eleanor, M10

“At the Migration Museum we got to play games from the olden days like knuckles, ring toss and a ball kissing thing. The knuckles were made from whatever they could find, sheep bones or anything! I loved playing with all of them!” Chloe M9

“On Thursday, I went to the Migration Museum and Ayers House. I got here by bus. First Kayla put our class into groups. My group looked at some ways we could make butter. Next, I went in Toby’s group. We saw the foot that the Aboriginal people had to eat in jail. It was so old and mouldy that they had to drink some water to push it down. Then we played old-fashioned games called Ring Toss, Knuckles and a game where you have to roll a circular stone at the same time and try and get them to kiss.” Owen M9

It was a wonderful day where we got to see household items from a century ago, we got to use slate on a slate board and practice olden day writing, we explored Ayers House where we saw a house as it would’ve been many years ago and we compared what we saw in this house to our own houses today. One of the best parts of our time was being able to make a peg doll toy like the children from the past would have that we were able to take home and share with our families.

It was a great opportunity for us to learn how things have changed overtime from clothes, toys, games, technology, cooking, keeping warm and many other parts of every day life. We had so much fun and learnt a lot!

M11 & M12 Art Gallery Excursion

Last week the Reception children in M11 & M12 went on an excursion to the Art Gallery as part of our classroom inquiry unit learning ab out ourselves and our identities. We participated in the "My Portrait, My Story' program with an Art Gallery educator and also visited the SA Museum to explore the Australian indigenous displays and other educational spaces.

'My Portrait, My Story' self-portraiture workshops invite children to reflect on portrait and self-portraiture as a form of artistic expression using Reggio Emilia's pedagogic approach. The Reggio approach places a high value on children's ability to improvise and respond to and emnjoy the unexpected.

The children had the opportunity to view a variety of works of art from the Art Gallery's collection to explore the differnt ways artists represent themselves and others. They learnt through discovery and were then able to express their own identity by creating a multisensory self-portrait.

We had an amzing day and enjoyed learning and discovering new things! We would like to thank Cleo de Gouw and the wonderful parent helpers who assisted us on the day.

Performing Arts

Festival of Music Auditions

This Monday two of our choir students auditioned to be soloists for the Festival of Music this September. They are hoping to get a spot singing in front of 1500 students and several thousand people on the Entertainment Centre stage.

We are incredibly proud of the students that auditioned and the way they represented themselves and Westbourne Park Primary School.

Talent show

For the last few weeks we have seen many of Westbourne Park’s students showing off their amazing talents. Among us are magicians, dancers, singers, violinists, acrobats and even a whip cracker! There is so much enthusiasm and talent within our student body and it is wonderful to see kids enjoying both performing in and watching the shows. The grand final will be in week 10.

Music for everyone – Peter Combe

On Wednesday over 350 Reception to year 5 students participated in a Peter Combe concert.

Mila C demonstrated her excellent abilities with a red balloon, students and teachers sang and played pretend instruments with an Australian icon, and Charlotte D got to meet Peter, having been in his virtual Spangle Road Couch Choir in 2020.

We are so lucky to have had this opportunity, and we look forward to bringing more local artists in to the school.

Wakakirri tickets

Wakakirri is coming along brilliantly this year. The students are working very hard to bring us a retelling of Jumanji. We will be performing at the Entertainment Centre on the 12^th of August. Tickets can be ordered through the school until the 14^th of June using the forms on schoolzine, and the QKR! App.

Reconciliation Week Assembly

On Friday last week we held our Reconciliation week Assembly.

We watched a video made by the SACE board with a beautiful welcome to country, and one which explained the purpose of Reconciliation Week.

LC1 & LC2 showed us the AUSLAN translation of the National Sorry Day apology, some students talked about the creative process and meaning behind our new school mural, and the choirs (Festival of Music and Junior choir) led the school with the song ‘Mayangan’. Mayangan is an Indigenous word from the Yolngu language spoken in North East Arnhem Land and it means ‘hope for the future’.

Bike Storage

Just a reminder to our students who ride their bikes to school.

The bike storage area in the school is not locked during the day, so please remember to bring your bike locks to school.

Volunteering in the Canteen

Fresh Bites Café acknowledges the important role that nutritious food plays in the growth and development of children and is therefore committed to offering our children healthy and nutritious meals and snacks.

The success of our canteen can only be ensured with the help and support of volunteers from our school community, so why not become involved in this invaluable role by joining the network.

Children love to see their family in the canteen and it is a great way for you to meet other members of the school community.

If you, or anyone you know, would be interested in working as a volunteer preparing recess and lunches and serving in the canteen, your help would be greatly appreciated.

The canteen is open Tuesday – Friday and shifts are approximately 3 hours and can be as often as weekly, fortnightly, monthly or one shift per term.

Fundraising News

Hello everyone!

First, we hope the kids had a FANTASTIC time at the WPPS Disco last Friday night! The beats were pumping, the glow lights were flashing and there were some serious dance moves going on!!

Over 400 students attended the Disco and $3,600 was raised. Well done everyone!!

A big thank you to the amazing DJ Steve who kept the fun going with good tunes and fun games. It’s a big night and Steve took it all in his stride.

And of course, special thanks must go to our wonderful WPPS Staff who gave up their free time to supervise the event. It was great to see some of them even squeeze in a little boogie!

Finally, a HUGE thank you to our very generous parents/caregivers who donated an absolute mountain of delicious treats – we were overwhelmed by the number of cupcakes, slices, crackles, and other yummy goodies that turned up for both discos! The kids were spoilt for choice, and we cannot thank you all enough for your support.

Next up is something for the adults – the WPPS Wine Drive. Keep an eye out for more details via SkoolBag/Schoolzine, along with an order form in Week 7. A great range of reds, whites, bubbles and Gin to get you stocked up for Winter. Don’t forget to tell your friends and family!

As always, we welcome suggestions from the WPPS school community regarding what and where the funds raised are spent – upgrading equipment, resources, play spaces and furniture throughout the school are just some examples. In the past, monies have been spent on drinking fountains, graduation ceremonies, Early Primary Readers, school murals, Yard B playground, school golf umbrellas, garden irrigation and soccer goals.

Requests can come from staff, students and families – all requests are thoroughly discussed and reviewed prior to being selected by the WPPS Fundraising Committee and WPPS Governing Council. Library News

The Library is abuzz at lunch times!

Some will come in and play games, draw, or colour in pictures, others will build magnificent structures with the magnetic blocks and legos. Some structures are big and others small, but all are made with great enthusiasm. If you are lucky enough you can buy a crown from Manroop. The ones that want to read, sometimes find it hard to find a quiet spot. There is always something to do for everyone in the library!

Samuel, Ezra, Harry and their friends have been building this enormous machine, called Timmy Tank, over a few weeks….an impressive machine with compartments that can open up.

A big thank you to everyone for your contribution to the success of the Book Fair.
